What Is Gold Vermeil?
Gold vermeil (pronounced "ver-may") is real gold — just applied differently than solid gold jewelry. Every Utsavi piece is crafted with a 2.5-micron layer of solid 18K gold, bonded over a base of 925 sterling silver.
How Vermeil Is Different From Gold Plating
Standard gold plating typically uses a thin layer of gold — often less than half a micron — over a brass or base-metal core. It fades quickly and can turn your skin green or irritate sensitive skin over time.
Vermeil is held to a higher standard. To legally be called "vermeil" in most markets, jewelry must have:
- A minimum gold thickness of 2.5 microns (five times thicker than standard plating)
- A base of genuine sterling silver, not brass or base metal
- At least 10K gold purity (we use 18K, for richer color and better durability)
This means vermeil holds its color longer, feels closer to solid gold jewelry, and is far kinder to sensitive skin — all at a more accessible price than solid gold.
